The 1994 FIFA World Cup was the first held on U.S. soil and came down to a memorable final between two world soccer powers. On July 17th at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, Brazil and Italy played to a scoreless draw in regulation and extra time, sending it into a sudden death penalty shootout. With Brazil leading 3-2 on PKs, Italy's star striker Roberto Baggio sailed the final attempt over the crossbar to give Seleção its record fourth world title.
Offered here is a special 1994 FIFA World Cup "Bertoni" trophy presented only to players, coaches and important staff members from the Brazil National Football team. Led by midfielder and team captain Dunga and the lethal combo up front of Romario and Bebeto, Brazil cruised through the group stage before winning close matches in the knockout rounds and sweating through a tight final.
The current FIFA World Cup trophy, designed by Silvio Gazzaniga and made by GDE Bertoni of Milan, Italy, was first introduced at the 1974 World Cup in West Germany. The large, 1-of-1 original World Cup trophy is made of 18-carat gold and gets the winning team engraved on it every four years. It belongs strictly to FIFA. In 1974, GDE Bertoni also began producing these smaller gold-plated brass versions for select members of the winning team every four years. It features an athletic figure with arms raised in triumph and a globe on top. The front bottom is engraved "FIFA WORLD CUP" and the rear bottom is hallmarked "© F.I.F.A.", "BERTONI" and "1974". A gold placcard on the 5x5x4 cm black marble base has "XV FIFA WORLD CUP USA 94" along with the 1994 tournament logo.
The well-crafted trophy, standing 15 cm tall and weighing 630 grams (22.5 oz.), remains in NM overall condition with an unblemished marble base and minor tarnishing/oxidation on the gold-plating. It comes housed in its original, wardrobe-like blue presentation case (EX). The interior of the 21-by-13-by-13 cm case is lined in elegant blue satin. The trophy sits atop an internal display stand enclosed by two doors that shut using a classy latch design.
It should be noted that we auctioned two 2002 Bertoni trophies (case included) in 2019 for $12,131 and $5,663, respectively.
