- Lot Description
During the summer of 1992, a group of 12 American basketball players set off to win an Olympic gold medal in Barcelona, Spain. Only this particular group, competing as the 1992 U.S. Men's Basketball team, was dubbed the "Dream Team." They represented the first American Olympic squad to feature active NBA players and proved to be an unstoppable juggernaut. Described by many American journalists as the greatest sports team ever assembled and called "the greatest collection of basketball talent on the planet" by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the unbeatable bunch obliterated every opponent by an average of 44 points per game in capturing the gold medal.
Led by co-captains Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, the team was coached by longtime Detroit Pistons head coach Chuck Daly who was assisted by fellow NBA coaches Lenny Wilkens and P.J. Carlesimo along with Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. Every player on the squad brought impeccable credentials to the table including Magic, Bird, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Clyde Drexler, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, and Christian Laettner.
Leading into the '92 Olympics, the Dream Team got its first taste of international competition in the FIBA Tournament of the Americas, June 27 - July 5, in Portland, OR. Ten countries participated and the U.S. cruised to the title with six blowout victories. This lot features a limited edition (97 of 100) 1992 Tournament of the Americas branded Spalding Top-Flight 100 basketball signed 14 Dream Team members. All four coaches are present. The only two players missing are Patrick Ewing and Karl Malone. The autographs are well-positioned and come in bold black marker averaging (8.5/10) in strength and eye appeal. The ball remains in perfect, like-new condition. One of the finer Dream Team balls you will find in the market. Malone's signature should be relatively easy to obtain. Ewing tends to be more difficult. Includes full LOA from PSA/DNA.
