- Lot Description
The City of Angels hosted the 1984 Summer Olympics and memorable performances from Team USA athletes dominated the headlines. Gymnast Mary Lou Retton became the first American to win gold in the individual all-around competition. Speedster Carl Lewis equaled Jesse Owens' legendary four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Games with four of his own in the same events (100m, 200m, 4x100m & Long Jump). Also on the track, Edwin Moses won his second gold in the 400m Hurdles eight years after his first.
Offered here is a lovely presentation of a 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics Games sample gold winner's medal. Mounted within a 7-by-7.5" wooden stand behind glass, the medal is positioned with the ribbon at the top sporting the 1984 Summer Games colors against a backdrop of black felt. Made by Jostens (manufacturer's sticker on bottom of wood base), it appears to be in pristine condition with the exact dimensions of gold medals that were awarded to champions at the '84 Games. The obverse reads "SAMPLE XXIII OLYMPIAD LOS ANGELES 1984" with Nike, Goddess of Victory, seated above the stadium. The reverse shows a winner carried by jubilant athletes with "SAMPLE" near the top.
The display slides into a perfectly fitting Jostens wooden box with a gold placard on top reading "THE GOLD - Created by JOSTENS For The LAOOC And The XXIIIrd OLYMPIAD GAMES 1984". Topping it off, the wooden box fits snugly inside a black leather carrying case. A rare combination that includes all three original components in terrific shape.
