- Lot Description
Sporting a suave beard and white headband (often spreading a political message), Brazilian midfielder Sócrates was the epitome of cool in the late 1970s and early 80s. His sense of style and creative ability on the pitch, along with a medical degree earned during his playing career, gave him the moniker "Doctor Socrates." (Sharing the same name as the famous Greek philosopher certainly helped.)
His national team career with Seleção was brief but memorable as he captained Brazil’s 1982 World Cup squad and scored twice at the ’86 World Cup. Most of his professional career was spent in his home country where he starred primarily for Sport Club Corinthians Paulista. From 1978-84, Socrates scored 74 goals in 135 matches for the decorated São Paulo club. This offered Socrates match worn Corinthians shirt dates to 1983, the same year “The Doctor” was named South American Footballer of the Year. It originates from the collection of Brazil National Team's longtime medic.
The white Corinthians shirt has South American apparel manufacturer Topper on the right chest and the team’s logo on the left chest, both ironed on the fabric. Socrates’ player number “8” is ironed on the back in black. The crew-neck collar and sleeve ends are ribbed for a flexible fit. Tagged by Topper inside the collar with a size “10” flag tag, it has a small materials tag (53% cotton / 47% polyester) on the inner right side. Wear is light to moderate with definite signs of pilling, stretching, and multiple laundry cycles. Includes full LOA from MEARS and a letter from José Luis Runco, who served as Brazil team medic from 1984-2014.
