The late, great Willie Mays was revered by his teammates and peers alike. By 1967 at the age of 36, he was clearly on the back end of his Hall of Fame career. His batting and power numbers had come down a bit, but he could still patrol center field with the best of them, earning yet another Gold Glove (11th straight) and All-Star appearance (13 consecutive seasons) to keep his unprecedented streaks alive.
Presented here is a 1967 Willie Mays Hillerich & Bradsby professional model bat signed by 22 members of the 1967 San Francisco Giants. Stamped 'S2' on the knob denoting the model number, the un-cracked ash bat shows no game use evidence but is confirmed to have been ordered by Mays during the '67 season. Autographs are presented on all sided of the barrel in bold black marker averaging 8/10 in strength and eye appeal. Notables include Willie Mays himself and fellow Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry along with Mike McCormick ('67 NL Cy Young), Cookie Lavagetto (1B coach), Dick Groat, , Tom Haller, Ollie Brown, Jesus Alou, Ray Sadecki, Peanuts Lowrey (3B coach), Dick Dietz, Charlie Fox (coach), Joe Gibbon and Nestor Chavez (died in '69 at age 21) to name a few. This bat comes from the same source as the Ernie Barnes 1965 Willie Mays original painting listed in this auction (Lot #2). Steve Blauner was a longtime entertainment executive who grew up in NYC a New York Giants fan. It includes two full LOAs from PSA/DNA: one for the autograph authenticity and the other from John Taube denoting the bat's authenticity as a Mays pro model.
