Carl Yastrzemski made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 1961. From the beginning, he felt tremendous pressure from Boston fans, taking on the unenviable task of succeeding Ted Williams in left field. At the plate, Yaz certainly proved a worthy successor, becoming a steady run-producer in the three-hole, winning the American League batting title in his third season, and showing a keen eye to draw walks like Ted. In left, he was a superior defensive player with a much stronger arm – an expert at playing the caroms off the Green Monster – and wound up winning a total of seven Gold Gloves.
Yastrzemski enjoyed his best season in 1967 when he won the AL MVP and Triple Crown with a .326 average, 44 homers and 121 RBI – two decades after Ted accomplished this rare feat for the second time. The next season, Yaz won his third AL batting title. Presented here a Yastrzemski Hillerich & Bradsby gamer dating to 1967-68. The professional model W215 bat (35”) shows outstanding use with contact marks all over the barrel, pine tar remnants on the handle, cleat marks and green bat rack streaks. On the knob is model number ‘W215” (stamped) along with the bat’s “32-1/2” weight (in pencil) and Yaz’s uniform No. “8” (in black marker). The two large ball marks on the top barrel give this bat ideal aesthetics. Includes LOA from John Taube of PSA/DNA with a GU 9 grade.
