The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates captured the franchise's third World Series title in a seven-game thriller over the New York Yankees. Bill Mazeroski famously won it with a walk-off homer in Game 7 at Forbes Field. It was the the first World Series ever to end on a game-winning home run and remains the only Game 7 from any Fall Classic to end in this manner.
Featured here is a 1960 game-worn Pirates home jersey donned by player/coach Mickey Vernon during that epic campaign for the Steel City. Vernon, the longtime Washington Senators first baseman who won the AL batting title in 1953, played in nine games in his final season as a player, serving primarily as the team's batting coach. The cream button-up flannel vest has "PIRATES" across the chest and No. "42" on the back in matching black felt on yellow gold twill. The sleeveless ends and collar are trimmed in gold and black piping. Proper Rawlings tagging appears on the lower left front indicating size 46. Chain-stitched in black on the left front shirttail is "42" [size] and "60" [year]. Just inside the left tail is a wash instructions label with a "Set 1 1960" flag tag. The all-original jersey displays a good amount of evenly distributed wear, with moderate pilling and some loose threads on the buttons.
When Maz joyously circled the bases after his historic World Series clinching homer in Game 7, there was Vernon at home plate to greet him along with his euphoric Pirates teammates in their home vest unis. In fact, there are a couple images online of Vernon's back with #42 showing that could be this very shirt. As a limited player and full-time coach, it seems unlikely Vernon would need more than two home sets for the season. Consigned by a lifelong Pirates collector who is adamant this is that jersey.
