- Lot Description
The “other side” of “Babe Bows Out.” Nat Fein's image of the Babe with his back to the camera won the Pulitzer, but team photographer David Blumenthal chose to preserve the poignant moment from the front, with the Yankees behind him with bowed heads and announcer Mel Allen looking on. The Babe leans heavily on his bat, his once-massive frame now slight as he speaks to the thousands of fans who came to pay tribute to the great man. This is a rare TYPE 2 example that was made by Blumenthal off his original negative in the 1980's and signed by him on the right side in gold ink reading: "June – 1948 Yankee Stadium ‘Old Timers Day.’” The front of the photo has clean borders, and the reverse has the David Blumenthal credit stamp. The photograph measures 10” x 8” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type II by PSA.
