If you had to pick Joe DiMaggio’s greatest season, it would inevitably be 1941. The star centerfielder led the Yankees to a remarkable nine World Series titles in his 13 seasons in New York, but 1941 was particularly special in the pantheon of sports history. Joltin’ Joe batted .357 with 30 home runs and a league-leading 125 RBI, although it was “The Streak” that captured every fan’s attention. From May 15 to July 16, DiMaggio recorded a hit in 56 consecutive games, blowing away the previous MLB record of 45 by Willie Keeler in 1897. (The only player since who has come remotely close was Pete Rose in 1978 when he hit in 44 straight.) During this remarkable two-month stretch, the Yankee Clipper hit .408 with 91 hits in 223 at-bats including 15 homers and 55 RBI, highlighting a campaign so incredible that it earned him American League MVP honors over Ted Williams (who batted .406 for the entire '41 season, by the way). Fittingly, the Bronx Bombers capped off Joe’s magical season by winning their fifth World Series in six years, a four-games-to-one whipping of the crosstown Brooklyn Dodgers.
Featured here is one of Joe DiMaggio’s Hillerich & Bradsby game used bats dating to the same season as his famous 56-game hit streak. In fact, this same bat has been photomatched to Game 1 of the 1941 World Series! Images of Joe holding this bat alongside Dolph Camilli of the Dodgers before the opening game have been deemed conclusive by the experts at MatchDocs, comparing the bat’s unique grain pattern with three different photographs of this sequence at slightly different angles. Joltin’ Joe played in all five games of the ’41 Fall Classic, going 5-for-19 at the plate during the series.
Factory records at the Louisville Slugger Museum indicate that DiMaggio ordered this exact “pre” model bat several times from 4/23/1941 through 9/19/1942. Another key detail is the “35 ½” weight marked on the knob. It measures the appropriate 36” in length but now weighs just under 35 ounces. (This slight drop in weight is typical of pre-war exemplars.) The ash bat exhibits heavy use with repeated checking (grain swelling) and several ball marks visible on the left barrel. The contact on the left barrel is a desirable characteristic of DiMaggio gamers as he was a “label up” hitter resulting in concentrated ball contact in that area. Cleat marks are present on the right and back barrel. A handle crack has been professionally repaired. John Taube of PSA/DNA has given the bat a GU 8 grade due to the excessive amount of use that likely continued into 1942. Both the vintage H&B center brand and DiMaggio’s full name insignia on the barrel have maintained gorgeous eye appeal for ideal display purposes.
We know of only one other Joe DiMaggio bat with an apparent photo-match that has sold publicly: a late-career 1949 gamer that auctioned for $157,333 in 2020. This special piece of history dates to Joe’s 56-hit streak season and was quite possibly used during that two-month stretch before ending up his hands before the first pitch of the 1941 World Series. Surely, it ranks as one of the finest DiMaggio artifacts to be offered. Extensive paperwork included from John Taube of PSA/DNA (GU 8) and MatchDocs (8 pages) along with the three photographs (1 original, 1 AP wire, and 1 re-strike) used for the match.
