Classic 1940 original photograph of Hank Greenberg, whose Hall of Fame résumé is impressive: 2-time American League MVP, 4-time AL Home Run champ; 4-time AL RBI leader; and 2-time World Series champ (1935 & 1945) with his beloved Detroit Tigers. The "Hebrew Hammer" was baseball's most feared slugger in the late 1930s and '40s. His 58 dingers in 1938 matched Jimmie Foxx's 1932 mark and stood as the most ever by a right-handed hitter until the McGwire/Sosa HR chase of 1998. In 1940, when this photo was taken, Greenberg batted .340 and led the AL with 41 big flies and 150 RBI to win his second MVP award. He left the Tigers early in the '41 season to serve in WW2 and missed four prime seasons. When he came back in his mid-30s, he again led the AL in homers.
The slug on the reverse is folded inward, so the photo was strategically left un-slabbed to allow it to be read. The caption commends the Jewish slugger for graciously moving from first base to left field and putting together a monster campaign to claim league MVP honors. Hank's follow-through pose is captured perfectly as he looks directly at the camera. Picture clarity is super sharp. Aside from minor surface wear, this Type 1 photo presents in terrific shape with clean white borders and nice corners.
