This is undoubtedly one of the finest Type 1 portraits of Jesse Owens in his prime. The photograph dates to 1935, when Owens made track and field history by breaking three world records and tying another in less than one hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This feat, which has never been equaled, made Owens an overnight sensation and set him on the path to the 1936 Olympics, where he would win four gold medals. This outstanding portrait depicts a smiling Owens in his Ohio State uniform. The detail is stunning, the composition flawless, and the contrast and warm toning amazing. Some surface abrasions and light stains are present, but none detract from this stunning portrait. The reverse has the Acmenewspictures stamp, the original 12/18/1935 dated caption slug, and various handwritten notations. The photograph measures 7” x 9.25” and has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA.
