- Lot Description
The 1934-36 R327 Diamond Stars set is one of the most beautiful baseball issues ever produced. Its unique art deco renderings, player selection and other eclectic nuances have captivated generations of collectors. Although the final checklist for the multi-year set reaches as high as #108, there were plans to take it to 120 as we proved in 2016 with our $62k sale of the lone surviving uncut sheet of those 12 unreleased cards.
Presented here is nice partial set with 33 of the 108 released cards from this colorful and underrated issue from the National Chicle gum company. Lovely examples of #83 Paul Waner (with rare 1935 blue back) and #50 Mel Ott have each been graded VG-EX 4 by SGC. The remaining 32 raw cards (one duplicate, Tom Bridges) range from AUTH/Poor to VG. Ungraded highlights include fellow Hall of Famers #27 Pie Traynor, #35 Earle Averill, #36 Ernie Lombardi, #39 Carl Hubbell, #48 Rick Ferrell, #59 Jim Bottomley, and #60 Red Ruffing. Other notables are Schoolboy Rowe, Pepper Martin, Jimmy Dykes, Ted Lyons, Joe Kuhel, Hal Trosky, Tony Cuccinello, Red Lucas, Cy Blanton, Tuck Stainback, and Harvey Hendrick.
