Herbert Hoover had the misfortune of ascending to the presidency just as the country was blindsided by the Great Depression. Faced with this unprecedented economic downturn, Hoover enacted several measures to bring the country out of its downward spiral. One of the more unsuccessful of them was the Hawley–Smoot Tariff of 1930. This was an attempt to raise U.S. Tariffs on imported goods which in turn only brought on retaliatory tariffs by America’s trading partners. This in turn only worsened the economic plight of the country. This document signed by President Hoover in 1930 appoints a member to the United States Tariff Commission. The appointment has been matted with a print of a painted portrait of the 31st president along with an engraved plaque listing his career achievements. The complete framed display measures 29.5” x 40” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
