In the 1920s, Babe Ruth and the Yankees shared their spring training home of St. Petersburg, Florida with the Boston Braves. While the Yanks trained primarily at Crescent Lake Field, they also used the Boston Braves’ Waterfront Park as well. This wonderful on-field snapshot was taken at Waterfront Park on March 29, 1928, and shows the rustic spring training facilities used at that time. A sparse crowd watches from the wooden seats as Babe Ruth in the foreground struts across the diamond. A handful of his teammates are working out in the background, completing this rare glimpse into Yankees spring training in 1928.
The Type 1 snapshot has taken on a nice sepia tone from age. The corners remain sharp and there are no discernible creases or discolorations. The reverse has been carefully labeled by the original owner and reads, “Waterfront Park St. Pete. March 29, 1928. Babe Ruth walking in from home plate.” The Velox paper stamping is present along with the remains of tape on the left and right edges. This photograph has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
