Offered here is a scarce gilt-bronze participation medal from the 1928 Amsterdam Summer Olympics. Made of gold-plated bronze, these were minted by Gerritsen and Van Kempen and designed by J.C. Wienecke, a renowned Dutch medalist. The obverse has two nude athletes (male and female) on the podium holding a torch over an Olympic flame. The reverse has Nike, Goddess of Victory, over Marathon Tower with a shield of Amsterdam between the two hemispheres and "1928" at the bottom. There were 2,971 athletes at the Games of the IX Olympiad, each of whom received standard solid bronze participation medals. Only a select number of important dignitaries received gilt versions like this one. 55mm in diameter, 4mm thick and weighing 64 grams, it comes in exceptional EF condition. Its thick gold plating remains stunningly shiny. A gorgeous medal from the first official "Summer" Olympic Games.
