This atmospheric action shot was snapped at the National Amateur Golf Championship held at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Short Hills, N.J. The tournament was major sports news in 1926 because it was featured another Bobby Jones-George Van Elm duel. The two amateur golfers had developed a spirited rivalry throughout the 1920s, and 1926 saw Bobby Jones winning both the won the British Open and the U.S. Open. When the two met at Baltusrol, Jones was the favorite to win, but Van Elm had other plans. In this Type 1 photo taken at the tournament, a large portion of the estimated 10,000 spectators follow the track of the ball George Van Elm had just driven off at the fifth hole. Van Elm would go on to beat Bobby Jones in what one Associated Press reporter called, “one of the most stunning upsets of links history." Measuring 8” x 10,” the front of this Type 1 photo shows overall toning from age along with edge wear to the white borders and a piece missing from the white of the lower left corner. The back of the photograph has the original “9-18-26” dated caption slug affixed along with the King Features Syndicate stamping and various hand written notes. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
