By 1926, Babe Ruth’s record setting home runs made him the idol of almost every boy in the country. Ruth had grown up unloved in boys’ home in Baltimore, and he knew how important it was for kids to have someone to look up to. And although he was the most popular sports figure in the nation, the Babe always found time for the kids, whether visiting and out of the way orphanage or, as this photo shows, on the field before a big league ballgame. The occasion for this photo was a question and answer session for a group of Chicago kids before the June 19, 1926, game against the White Sox. The Bade posed for pictures and demonstrated his home run swing for the kids. That season Ruth’s 47 homers would win him his seventh home run title, and he would go on to win five more before his was through. Although he didn’t hit a home run the day this photo was taken, the Bambino did hit a double and go 2 for 3 overall.
The Type 1 photograph has been printed to its edges. The embossed lettering reading “File Copy/Do Not Remove” appears twice on the photo, indicating that it originates directly from the files of Underwood & Underwood. There is some surface scuffing visible, but this does not take away from the wonderful moment captured in this image. The reverse has the original cation slug along with the Underwood & Underwood Chicago stamps. This photograph has been encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
