In the election of 1876, Rutherford B. Hayes lost the popular vote to Democrat nominee Samuel J. Tilden, but neither candidate was able to win enough electoral votes to claim victory. In what was called the Compromise of 1877, Hayes was awarded the presidency in return for a series of concessions to the democrats including the end of Reconstruction in the South. Hayes’ presidency coincided with the last major battles with the Native Americans in the west. This 1880 army commission has been signed by the 19th president and appoints a 1st lieutenant to the 4th Cavalry who were fighting the Utes in southern Colorado at the time. The commission document has been matted alongside a print of a painted portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes with an engraved plaque listing his career achievements. The complete framed display measures 37” x 31” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
