Ulysses S. Grant’s swept to office based on his popularity as the victorious commander of the Union Army during the Civil War. During his two terms in office, Grant oversaw the mass western migration and the fight to pass the Fifteenth Amendment which guaranteed voting rights for African Americans. His presidency was unfortunately marred by a series of scandals caused by his poor choices of political appointees who used their offices for graft. Still, Grant remained one of the most popular men to hold the nation’s top office long after he passed away in 1885. This document was signed by President Grant during his first term in office in 1869 and appoints the Collector of Internal Revenue for Tennessee. The appointment document has been matted along with a print of a painted portrait of the 18th president and an engraved plaque listing his accomplishments. The complete framed display measures 29” x 42.5” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
