President James Buchanan had the unwelcome role of trying to stop the approaching Civil War. During his presidency from 1857 to 1861, Buchanan attempted to appease both the North and the South which in the end only angered both camps. By the time Abraham Lincoln succeeded him in 1861, the country had already begun its decent into civil war. James Buchanan has signed this document appointing the U.S. Consul to Tahiti in crisp black fountain pen. The appointment has been matted along with a portrait of the 15th president and an engraved plaque listing his career achievements. The complete framed display measures 26.5” x 38” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
