Before he was elected the 8th president of the United States, Martin Van Buren had a varied and distinguished political career: governor, senator, and attorney general of the state of New York, secretary of State under President Andrew Jackson, minister to Great Britain, and primary founder of the Democratic Party. As president, Van Buren had to navigate the Panic of 1837, a devastating financial crisis that would last through the early 1840s. The financial state of the nation was further hindered by the Second Seminole War. Fought against the Seminole Tribe in Florida, the war dragged on from 1835 to 1842 and necessitated an expansion in the United States Army. This signed commissioning document from 1839 appoints an officer to America’s growing military. The signed commission is matted with a portrait print of Van Buren along with an engraved plaque detailing his career accomplishments. The complete framed display measures 29.5” x 35” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
