After drafting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, James Madison went on to become the 4th president of the United States. During his term, Madison skillfully led the nation through its second war of independence against Great Britain. The war was sparked by Britain’s seizing of United States trade ships and impressing American sailors into the Royal Navy against their will. President Madison has signed this four language ships paper which was issued to provide protection to merchant ships on the high seas. Along with Madison’s signature, the piece has been additionally signed by James Monroe, the Secretary of State under Madison and later the 5th president of the United States. The ships paper has been smartly mounted with portraits of both Madison and Monroe along with an engraved plaque listing the two president’s accomplishments. The complete framed display measures 33.5” x 61.5” and comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA.
