After two seasons of being the 49ers backup quarterback, 1981 was Joe Montana’s debut season as a starter. His cool head and determined drive not only led the team to one of its best records in franchise history, but all the way to victory in Super Bowl XVI. This photo by Nancy Hogue shows Montana laying out a play on the field during the November 1, 1981, win over the Steelers. Hogue managed to capture the look of poise and tenacity on Montana’s face that would soon earn him the nickname “Joe Cool.” The Type 1 photo measures 8” x 10” and presents in essentially mint condition. The back has Nancy Hogue’s credit stamp and Sporting News hologram along with several handwritten notations. Encapsulated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
