"Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) was an Armenian-Canadian photographer renowned for his iconic portraits of notable individuals, including world leaders, celebrities, and cultural icons. He was born on December 23, 1908, in Mardin, Ottoman Empire (present-day Turkey), and immigrated to Canada in 1924. Karsh's interest in photography began in his teenage years, and he honed his skills while working as an apprentice in a photography studio in Ottawa, Canada. His breakthrough came in 1941 when he took a portrait of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during World War II. The photograph, famously known as The Roaring Lion, captured Churchill's determined expression and became one of Karsh's most celebrated works. Throughout his career, Karsh photographed numerous influential individuals from various fields, including artists, scientists, politicians, and actors. His subjects included Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Audrey Hepburn, Martin Luther King Jr., Pablo Picasso, and many more. Karsh's portraits are characterized by their meticulous lighting, composition, and ability to capture the essence and personality of his subjects. Karsh's photography brought him international recognition and earned him numerous awards and accolades. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada and received honorary doctorates from several universities.
