George Platt Lynes (1907-1955) was an American photographer best known for his work in the field of fashion photography and male nude photography. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey, and initially pursued a career as a writer and illustrator. However, he became interested in photography and moved to New York City in the 1930s to pursue it professionally. Lynes quickly established himself as a prominent fashion photographer, working for prestigious publications such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. His photographs captured the elegance and sophistication of the fashion world, and he collaborated with many influential figures in the industry, including designers such as Christian Dior and Coco Chanel. In addition to his fashion photography, Lynes also explored male nudity as an artistic subject. At a time when homosexuality was heavily stigmatized, Lynes discreetly photographed male nudes, often using ballet dancers and friends as his models. His work in this area was groundbreaking and controversial, as it challenged societal norms and artistic boundaries. Unfortunately, Lynes' career was cut short due to his untimely death in 1955 at the age of 48. Despite his significant contributions to the world of photography, his work remained relatively unknown until after his death when a vast collection of his photographs was discovered. Since then, his photography has gained recognition and has been exhibited in major galleries and museums worldwide, solidifying his status as an influential figure in the history of photography.
