Gerh. D. Wempe Chronometer-werke, Hamburg, Germany, Serial #3864, WWII production chronometer. This chronometer was picked up in Travemunde at the Luftwaffe installation in the spring of 1945 by Capt Wm. C. Arthur of the 7th Armored Division, after the Germans had hurriedly abandoned the base. The late Wm. Arthur has included a hand written note to that effect. The standardized 3 pillar movement bears typical Wempe features, including strong steel cable instead of a chain for the fusee, a unique balance stop with "stop" knob on the outside of the tub, and high quality lever escapement with helical hairspring. The mahogany inner box is well figured mahogany, with some nicks & scrapes, and bears a silvered ID plaque and beveled glass. The gimbal is made of phenolic resin "metallgummi", with a spring type side lock. (evidence of brass shortage during the war) The outer box is painted military green. Ratchet winding key is original.
