Etienne Maxant, Paris, a monumental quality cast bronze mantel clock of fanciful design, with swags and scrolls, the front section with stylized griffins. Gilt brass dial with individual cartouche numerals. The unique feature of this clock is the winding system employed by Maxant on virtually all of his clocks. He added arbors below the movement, well supported, such that the winding handles are invisible when the bezel is closed. You open the crystal and pull the winding handles outward until they engage and simply turn clockwise. Once finished, push the handle inward, and align it with the bezel and close the crystal. 8 day time and gong strike. Excellent quality.
Condition
The case was originally gilded, and now gold seen only in the crevices; still attractive as is. All porcelain numerals are intact and perfect. Hands original. Note US patent date of 1879. Clock is fully wound, please don't turn keys more. Mechanically sound, but needs cleaning. Proper pendulum is present. Details and other models offered by Maxant can be seen on the Internet. ACCESSORIES: Weight, Pendulum , 20in x 11in x 7in
