- Lot Description
Patek, Philippe & Co., Geneva, a late 19th century minute repeating pocket watch for Silas Sadler Packard, 31 jewel, stem wind and lever set, cotes de Geneve decorated nickel bar movement with counterpoised lever escapement and cut bimetallic balance with gold screws in an 18 karat, yellow gold hunting case with engraved ciphers on front and back, the cuvette with serial number and engraved "Made For S.S. Packard by Patek, Philippe & Co. Geneva July 1884", the interior of the front cover engraved with names and dates of three members of the S.C.T. Dodd family, with roman numeral, single sunk, signed white enamel dial with plum colored steel spade and poker hands, serial #65628, 54mm,119.1g TW, with later box and an extract from the Patek Philippe archives

CASE: Shallow dents; Small dent, band, between hinges; Minor dents on one side of repeat slide; Very fine scratches on outer surface of case; Scratch on repeat train bridge; Front cover with small gap at band when closed, adjacent to hinge; Front cover with slight misalignment with pendant when closed; Cover hinges a bit loose; Gold cap on pusher worn through; Bow with minor wear; Crown beginning to wear through; Precious metal content marked. DIAL: Very good. HANDS: Oxide, tip of minute; MOVEMENT PLATES: Very fine scratches on plate; Pin pricks; Ratchet wheel with spot of oxide; Crown wheel core with minor oxide; Specks of dirt. MOVEMENT FUNCTION: Running order (winds, sets and ticks). COMPLICATION: Functioning properly, would benefit from service. Silas Sadler Packard (1826 - 1898) established the "Bryant, Stratton & Packard's Mercantile College" in New York City in 1858. In 1867 he bought out Bryant & Stratton, and changed the name of the school to "Packard's Business College". He was the author of the "Bryant and Stratton Book- keeping Series", "Packard's Complete Course of Business Training", "The New Packard Commercial Arithmetic" and "Packard's New Manual of Book - keeping and Correspondence", and other business related titles. Samuel Calvin Tate Dodd was a lawyer, a friend of S.S. Packard, and well known through his work for John D. Rockefeller. He devised trusts that enabled Rockefeller to own multiple oil companies, and defended him against accusations that the conglomerate was a monopoly. 2.) Arrange for shipping:
Most watches, coins and jewelry can be shipped in-house. A shipping fee will be included on your invoice if your item can be shipped in-house. In-house shipping is done via Fed Ex Second Day Air unless otherwise requested or specified.
For clocks and all other items the list of shipping agents below has been provided for your convenience. You may work with any independent shipper you choose. Schmitt Horan & Co. assumes no responsibility for error or omission by any third-party agent.
All successful bidders are responsible for all packing and shipping charges, which are not included in the sales price. Bidders shall pay the shipping agent directly before items are delivered. Quotes provided by the shipping agents are approximate and are subject to reasonable adjustments once the item(s) is picked up.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL RETURNS BE ACCEPTED OR REFUNDS ISSUED LATER THAN 30 DAYS AFTER THE AUCTION. It is the responsibility of the bidder to make sure they receive their items before the 30 day return period is over. Transit damage alone is not sufficient reason to return an item. We and the shipping agents will gladly assist in claims against transport companies.
