- Lot Description
An 11.1 x 8.4' circa 1930 Navajo Ganado regional rug. Woven of handspun wool, in natural white, black, gray, dark brown and light brown on a red ground, with three serrated diamonds along the center flanked by angular bars and serrated devices, within a serrated border. Light wear; several stains. 133 x 100". ESTIMATE $6,000-8,000 Provenance: Commissioned by John C. Holley, Jr. of Grosse Pointe, Michigan from the Hubbel Trading Post, circa 1930, for use in his hunting lodge near Lake Placid, New York. Christopher Selser of Park Avenue, New York, the former Director of ACA American Indian Arts who, along with Alice Kaufman, authored "Navajo Weaving Tradition: 1650 to the Present." Purchased by Robert Teeter, June 1983. The original correspondence between Teeter, Kaufman and Selser, pertaining to this item, is available for review.Light wear; several stains.
