In 1924 the Wyler Watch Company was founded in Basel, Switzerland by brothers Paul and Alfred Wyler. Paul had already established a reputation for developing durable yet affordable movements and models. The company soon entered a mutually beneficial but unofficial partnership with Binda Group, an Italian watch and jewelry company who distributed much of their pieces. In 1927 Paul invented the Incaflex balance spring, a shock-protection system which brought the company international attention when he arranged a publicity stunt at the Eiffel Tower four years later, dropping the watch from the top to demonstrate that the movement continued to function perfectly after hitting the ground. In 1933 Wyler and Binda made their collaboration official, joining the companies together and changing the name of the Swiss manufacturer to Wyler Vetta. This allowed the two companies to survive through both the interwar period and World War II, and in 1937 they introduced a waterproof watch that did not use conventional soft gaskets, making it infinitely more reliable. In 1944 Albert Einstein fell into a lake in Central Park while wearing a Wyler watch, and wrote a letter to the company expressing his admiration for their design which became an integral part of their advertising for several decades after. In 1962 the company was introduced to the American market by reproducing the Eiffel Tower drop at the newly completed Space Needle during the World’s Fair in Seattle, Washington. Binda began to handle the marketing and distribution of Wyler Vetta more and more over the years, until in 1993 all the company stock, assets, and brand new were wholly acquired by them. Binda continues to produce watches with their name, with a new facility in Biel manufacturing watches under the name Wyler Genève in addition to the original line.
