William LaBarge (1918-2003) American, Half Circle Glass Top Brass Faux Bamboo Table. Done in the Hollywood Regency style, original patina.
Size: 34 x 16 x 29 1/4 in.
William “Bill” LaBarge Sr. was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1918 but grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where his father worked for an industrial manufacturer. He attended Washington University before joining the Army Air Corp. He became a fighter pilot during World War II where he served in North Africa and Italy, earning a Purple Heart. In 1946 he moved to Holland, Michigan to marry his wartime sweetheart Eileen, with whom he raised five children. He became a furniture salesman with a local company for fifteen years before purchasing the residential mirror division of Donnelly Mirrors and renaming it LaBarge Mirrors in 1962. For the next twenty-five years the company produced a plethora of pieces in classic, revivalist, and modern styles, focusing mainly on mirrors but eventually branching out to include other home furnishings like glass top tables and Hollywood Regency style accessories. At first simply a distributor, a factory was erected in 1970 that allowed them to expand and come up with their own concepts. In 1987 he sold the company to Masco Corporation, dividing his time between Holland and Naples, Florida until his death on January 17th, 2003. Other members of the LaBarge family continued to be involved with the company until 2013 when it was bought by the Heritage Home Group, and in 2018 all assets and materials were acquired by Rock House Farm Investments and manufacturing was moved to new headquarters in North Carolina. The old showroom and factory are abandoned, but their pieces are still appreciated by collectors and interior decorators for their timeless fashion and exceptional, hand-made quality.
