Wayan Barwa (1933-2004) Balinese, Peliatan Bali Painting. Gouache on Canvas.

Wayan Barwa was born in the village of Peliatan in Ubud, Bali, in 1933. At an early age he was exposed to the work of Dutch artists who had visited the island, particularly Walter Spies and later Ari Smit, who he studied directly under. He became a foundational member of the “Young Artists Style” movement, creating vibrant paintings of everyday life in the Ubud community. He instructed his son and grandson in the style as well, who both went on to become famous artists in Bali. Barwa opened his own gallery in 1997 to give new artists an opportunity to show their work, lauded for including pieces not just in the naive art form but in other styles and mediums as well. He was instrumental in convincing the government to combine several programs into the Indonesian Art Institute in Denpasar in 2003, to help preserve various traditional art forms that were on the verge of extinction. He passed away the following year, leaving a painting dynasty and decades of inspirational artwork in his wake.
