In 1884 a pharmacist in Columbus, Georgia named John Stith Pemberton began experimenting with various fruits, plants, and liquids in an effort to create a “stimulating tonic” that he could sell in his shop. After two years of trial and error, he introduced a substance named after the two key ingredients, coca leaves (which provided cocaine) and kola nuts (which provided caffeine): Coca-Cola. The stimulant was extremely effective, but overly bitter, and he quickly added red Italian wine and abundant sugar in order to make it palatable. Promoted as a “healthy tonic,” it caught on almost immediately. Pemberton’s reasons were two-fold, in that he hoped to make a fortune by patenting his own concoction and he was seeking a means to wean himself from morphine, a painkiller which he had become severely addicted to after being gravely wounded in the American Civil War. At the time cocaine was unregulated and being promoted as a “cure” for opioid addiction, so he developed the beverage as a patent medicine. Pemberton’s bookkeeper, Frank Mason Robinson, is credited with naming the product and creating its logo, as well as the successful early marketing campaign to get it into local drugstores. In 1889 the formula and brand were sold for $2,300 (roughly $71,000 in 2022) to Asa Griggs Candler, who incorporated the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Georgia in 1892. Their very first ad capitalized on the significant burst of energy it provided, and Candler is credited as one of the first merchants to use merchandising in an advertising strategy, making the drink a nationwide success within two short years. Between 1889 and 1892 the process and consistency changed substantially, as the growing use of carbonation in beverages was seen as a better vessel for the product and allowed it to be dispersed in greater quantities. The company has operated a franchised distribution system ever since, largely producing syrup concentrate which is then sold to various bottlers throughout the world who hold exclusive territories. In 1919 the company was sold to Ernest Woodruff’s Trust Company of Georgia, after which it was soon reincorporated under the Delaware General Corporation Law that same year. Coca-Cola acquired Minute Maid in 1960 for an undisclosed amount, but decided to diversify their holdings as their market share began to fall from 60% due to growing competition with Pepsi and other products. In 1982 they acquired the movie studio Columbia Pictures for $692 million and launched a series of entertainment takeovers, namely Merv Griffin Enterprises and Embassy Communications in the mid-1980s. This formed their Entertainment Business Sector, which would later merge with Tri-Star Pictures to start out Columbia Pictures Entertainment, with CPE holding a stake in the company. Overextended and unprepared for the fickle nature of the film industry, Coca-Cola sold off two assets in 1986: Presto Products and Winker-Flexible Products, to an investment group led by E.O. Gaylord, for $38 million. This was soon followed by the sale of Columbia to Sony for $3 billion in 1989. After considerable corporate restructuring and luring industry professionals from around the world, the company acquired the Indian cola brand Thums Up in 1993 and the American soda company Barq’s in 1995. In 1999 Coca-Cola purchased 50% of the shares of Inca Kola for $200 million, subsequently taking control of overseas marketing and production for the brand. In 2001 it acquired the Odwalla brand of fruit juices, smoothies, and bars for $181 million, although the brand was later discontinued in 2020. The company’s 2009 attempt to buy Chinese juice maker Huiyuan Juice Group ended when China rejected its $2.4 billion bid, on the grounds the resulting company would be a virtual monopoly. In 2011 it acquired the remaining stake in Honest Tea, having bought a 40% stake in 2008 for $43 million. In 2014 it acquired a small stake in Monster Beverage, followed by obtaining a minority stake ownership in the cold pressed juice manufacturer, Suja Life LLC in 2015. Despite difficulties faced during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company continues to grow, having acquired stakes in other ventures including Chi Ltd and Body Armor. Today the Coca-Cola Company has become one of the most powerful multinational corporations in the world, and their wares are ubiquitous, found in nearly every country on Earth.
