Vintage Folger Adams Illinois Penitentiary Brass Prison Key. Recognizable A in the loop at top, with serial # 14AE29 and other inscriptions throughout.
Size: 2 1/4 x 4 1/2 in.
#5300 .
In 1905 a steel company named Folger Adam was founded in Lemont, Illinois, manufacturing detention cells and other security equipment requiring metal fabrication. They remained in business under that name until 2004, when they merged with their biggest rival Southern Steel to create the Southern Folger Detention Equipment Company. Today, the company produces security equipment for correctional facilities of all sizes throughout the United States. But what they are best known for are their prison locks and keys, particularly the large foreboding pieces manufactured in the early 20th Century. Today many prison locks are electromechanical, with a locking mechanism fitted inside the door that can be opened and closed with the use of the lock cylinder, an electrical current, or a combination of the two. The electrical current helps to make lockdowns effective by making it possible to lock all doors at once, or to unlock individual doors without needing to unlock them by hand. For much of the 20th Century, however, they were purely mechanical, and in an effort to prevent skeleton keys from being made and smuggled in the control of production was carefully maintained, giving the companies who manufactured them a virtual monopoly. The sturdy, immense metal Folger Adam keys were developed to work in the locks they made strong enough to withstand the force of numerous bodies slamming into the door at once. Due to the glacial pace at which the prison industry evolves, many of these doors are still in use, and the locks and their keys have become a unique (albeit dark) piece of Americana.
