In 1814 Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther created a porcelain manufacturing business in Hohenberg an der Eger, Bavaria, Germany. He brought a wealth of knowledge from his time working at the Wallendorf porcelain manufactory in Lichte. After his death in 1845 the factory was headed by his widow Johanna and her two sons. More than half of the factory was destroyed by a fire in 1848, but it was rebuilt, and by the 1860s they were producing large quantities of hand-painted and gilded porcelain products. A second porcelain factory was established by Lorenz Hutschenreuther, the eldest son, in Selb. In 1879 the original assets and factory were sold to the Schönwald group, who then sold it to Conrad and August Bauscher. They moved the entire factory to Weiden and renamed it Gebrüder Bauscher Porzellan Fabrik am Bahnhof Weiden. They specialized in hotel porcelain, and employed seventy workers, many of whom came from Hohenberg. In 1907 the factory became a limited liability company, and then a joint stock company in 1911. After Conrad and August passed away the company foundered and was finally acquired in 1918 by the Strupp Group. In 1927 the company found its way home, so to speak, when Lorenz Hutschenreuther AG acquired the assets that had once been owned by its creator’s father. The factory continued to function through World War II up to 1944 but was partially destroyed by bombing. They resumed production in the US Zone of Germany post-War, and remained in business until 1998 when it was separated from the Group and renamed BHS Tabletop AG, concentrating since then on professional out-of-home catering ware and utensils.
Excellent.
