Viktor Shvaiko was born on August 23rd, 1965 in Altai, Russia. He was born with a deformation of the foot that led to almost half a dozen surgeries to correct it by the time he was ten, and to pass the time during his convalescence he taught himself to draw and paint. He entered Junior Art School at the age of twelve, eager to focus on gaining entrance to the Specialized School of Art. During his third year of study his parents moved from Barnaul to Mukachevo, so he stayed behind alone and hid inside the school, sleeping under a podium in order to continue his focus on art. In 1985, however, he was immediately drafted into the army, serving for two years as a combat artist as well as making lettering and illustrations for propaganda posters and signs. In 1987, after demobilization, he moved to Mukachevo to join his parents, but after experiencing a massive creative block he decided to travel the entire length of the Soviet Union to explore and gain inspiration. He drew and painted all along the way, sometimes walking, sometimes traveling by train, and the arduous journey instilled a renewed drive and interest in his cultural heritage. When his journey brought him back to Barnaul, he decided to stop there and took a job as an artist working for a construction company in order to make some money. A year later his father got him work with a company in Kiev, where he met and married his wife Valentina. After their daughter was born in 1989 they moved to Yugoslavia, where Shvaiko spent the next two years planning their defection to the West through Italy. His wife was crucial in arranging exhibitions of his work and selling them through galleries, and in 1991 they managed to smuggle themselves and a scarce few art supplies via Rijeka Bay in Croatia, arriving in Italy with practically nothing. With assistance from several Czech and Russian emigres in Rome he managed to find enough money to paint a collection of new watercolors and hold his first solo show at Porta Porteze, leading to his time as the artist in residence for the Rastropovich Institute. In 1993 he and his family were able to immigrate to the United States, where his career finally bloomed once he obtained representation from important galleries in New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. His forte became painting cafés from areas around Italy, France, and the rest of Europe, with a great sense of lighting and shadows in his evening and morning paintings. He became an American citizen in 2004, and his pieces can now be found in public, private, and corporate collections around the world.
