Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865) Japanese, Framed Pair of Woodblock Prints. Pair of woodblock prints matted and framed together. Both woodblocks depict kabuki actors in their character roles performing scenes from their respective plays. Framed.
Overall Size: 25 1/2 x 19 in.
Sight Size: 9 1/4 x 14 in.Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865) was one of the most prolific and commercially successful Japanese woodblock print artists of the Edo period. A leading figure of the Utagawa school, he was renowned for his vibrant and dynamic ukiyo-e prints, particularly his portraits of kabuki actors, bijin-ga (beautiful women), and historical scenes. Kunisada’s work was characterized by bold colors, elaborate compositions, and a keen sense of drama, which made his prints highly popular among contemporary audiences. Despite being overshadowed in later art history by contemporaries like Hokusai and Hiroshige, Kunisada played a crucial role in shaping 19th-century Japanese printmaking, producing thousands of works that captured the energy and culture of Edo-period Japan.
