Bob and Roberta "Bobbie" Gottlieb were a couple struggling in the late 1960s to raise their three boys in Westchester, New York when they came up with the idea to start their own wholesale company. Bob traveled frequently to Asia to work for an import company, and Bobbie had worked as a production assistant on the Jackie Gleason and Ed Sullivan TV programs. When Bob returned in 1969 with a giant inflatable replica of a Heinz ketchup bottle, Bobbie convinced him to put their life savings into developing Two’s Company, with them and their children selling novelty and gift items out of their home. The original name of the company was Two Plus Three, which represented their whole family, but was eventually changed in the early 1970s as their children went off to college. The company then expanded into lucite home and entertainment products, from picture frames to bagel baskets to cookbook holders, with Bob earning the nickname “The King of Lucite” in the mid 70s throughout the New England area. Bob passed away from lung cancer in 1978, and Bobbie enrolled in courses at Harvard Business School to ensure her ability to run the company on her own. Her son Tom became a partner in the company in 1980, and his time working in Taiwan and fluency in Chinese helped them expand both their sales market and sourcing options. In 1981 they became the first American company to have an office in Beijing, and over the next forty years they continued to expand their empire, absorbing several other companies under their umbrella. They continue to make a wide variety of items, including some of their original classic lucite pieces that have stayed in demand, although they have diversified significantly to keep up with changing tastes and desires.
