The role of jewelry within the Victorian English Era (1837-1901) was important in determining a person’s identity and social status, as the type and quantity of them would objectively demonstrate wealth, class prestige, and respectability. It was unconventional for men to wear jewels as they were considered a feminine object, although it became expected during this time for men to give jewels to a woman they admired. While cameos were most popular during the era, particularly the early Romantic Period until 1861, intricate gold pendants, draping necklaces, and long elaborate earrings were common. Colored gold, particularly red and green, was used generously in creating floral and leaf pattern motifs, with a heavy emphasis on themes of nature and delicacy. Consumerism and the exponential growth of capitalism through the 19th Century is directly linked to the burgeoning obsession with “exotic gems from the Far East,” including jade. Since ancient times jade was prized by ancient stoneworkers for its smooth feel and versatility. Many cultures equated the stone and its stunning green color with harmony, eternity, and virtue.
