These two books were written by Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894), an English writer of romantic, devotional, and children’s poems.
Sizes: 7 1/8 x 4 1/8 in. 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 in.
Born in London, she wrote two Christmas carols well-known in England (In the Bleak Midwinter and Love Came Down at Christmas), and her brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was a poet who founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and inspired artists like William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. As a child, Christina dictated her first story to her mother before she even learned how to write; her first commercially printed collection, Goblin Market and Other Poems, was published by Macmillan in 1862, and after its publication, Rossetti was named the natural successor to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who had died the year before in 1861.
Contemporaries called her a feminist illuminating the plight of Victorian women, and her works strongly influenced writers such as Ford Madox Ford and Virginia Woolf.
Sing-Song: A Nursery Rhyme Book, was published in London and New York by MacMillan in 1893 and is a New and Enlarged Edition, with one hundred and twenty illustrations by Arthur Hughes that were engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. The green cloth binding has gilt-lettering on the spine, blank endpapers, a pencil note and then the half-title, a full-page frontis drawing, then the title page, a dedication page which says “Rhymes Dedicated Without Permission To The Baby Who Suggested Them”, six pages of Contents (ix - xiv), 135 pages of text, and all the edges are gilt.
Monna Innominata: Sonnets and Songs was first published in 1881 and here was published in 1908 as a limited edition by Thomas Mosher in Portland, Maine. The book is a second edition that was printed on Van Gelder paper and consisted of only 925 copies. The title and date “1908” are printed on the spine, there’s uncut pages at the front, then the half-title which says “Old World Series” at top, the title page is printed in red and black letters, then the limitation page, two pages of Contents, 96 pages of text, and the page after the text says the book was printed by George D. Loring in Portland.
Arthur Hughes (1832 - 1915) was an English painter and illustrator associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and one of the most distinguished of the Pre-Raphaelite artists, remarkable for his delicacy of color and drawing.
The books are in really good condition. Sing-Song measures 7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. It has light wear at the heel and crown, two small spots on the front cover (which resembles silk moire endpapers), light wear along one edge of the spine, light rubbing at the tips, the last free endpaper at the rear has browning on it, and all the other pages and illustrations are clean and bright.
Monna Innominata is in great condition. It measures 7 1/8 x 4 1/8 with a tight binding, beautiful covers and clean pages and text, and is all you could want for in a book, with faint darkening on the spine and a smidge of a brown spot on the front cover, and the book just screams “buy me”.
