Tibetan Watercolor on Silk Wheel of Life. Watercolor on silk illustration of the Tibetan Wheel of Life, mounted to board and framed.
The Tibetan Wheel of Life, or Bhavachakra, is a symbolic representation of cyclic existence (samsara) in Buddhist philosophy. Traditionally depicted as a large, circular diagram, it illustrates the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth driven by karma and desire. At its center, three animals—a pig, a snake, and a rooster—symbolize ignorance, hatred, and attachment, the root causes of suffering. Surrounding them are the six realms of existence, ranging from heavenly to hellish states, each influenced by past actions. Encircling the entire wheel are the twelve links of dependent origination, which explain the process of reincarnation. The Wheel of Life serves as a teaching tool, reminding practitioners of the impermanent and suffering-filled nature of existence while encouraging the pursuit of enlightenment and liberation from samsara.
