Tibetan Coral, Turquoise, and Silver Beaded Necklace with Jade Pendant.
Hanging size: 10 1/4 in.
#5337 .
Norbu in Tibetan means "jewel," and is also synonymous with "spirituality" and "wealth." The Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha (the community of beings on the path of enlightenment) are referred to as the Three Jewels, essential to a practitioner of Buddhism. Throughout Tibetan history the most widely used gem was turquoise. Dubbed the "Sky Stone," Tibetans believed that this ocean-colored gem was a drop of the heavens themselves, and revered it for its spiritual value. For many Tibetans, turquoise is a token of love and protects both the giver and the recipient. Accompanying these gems are almost always strings of red coral and pearls. They adorn men and women's necklaces, earrings, and hair ornaments, as well as elaborate headdresses and precious silver and gold ritual objects. This narrow variety of gems in an area rich in natural resources is explained by the traditional reluctance towards mining and the extraction of precious substances from the earth, for fear of offending the local gods and guardians. Jade represents purity, harmony, and protection in Buddhist culture, and is believed to bring calmness and balance while warding off negative energies. This stone has been used to treat health issues since the earliest dynasties in China to eliminate toxins, promote blood circulation, and relieve fatigue, thus earning the name rikgyu, or "medicine king stone."
