Three Books by George Moore, Limited Editions, Signed 1923 -1926.
Sizes: 9 x 6 x 1 in. 9 1/8 x 5 3/4 in. (2)
The first book in this group is The Apostle by George Moore, a limited edition that was published and signed by Moore in 1923.
It’s a play that was written by Moore in 1911 and is the limited edition that was published by Heinemann in 1923. The play begins two months after the Crucifixion and centers around the character of Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, as he tries to spread Christianity throughout the world. The play is set in ancient Judea and explores the themes of faith and redemption, and it follows Peter as he struggles with his own faith and desire for power and influence - he encounters various challenges and obstacles along the way, including persecution, betrayal, and temptation. The play is divided into three acts, each of which explores a different aspect of Peter's journey.
The book has a paper label on a cream-colored spine, a gray-green cloth on front and back, gray-green endpapers, a half-title, followed by the limitation page, which is signed by Moore and says this is number 806 of 1030 copies printed on Van Gelder paper, of which only 1000 copies were for sale. Then the title page and a page which says the book was printed by T and A Constable at the University Press in Edinburgh, an Epistle Dedicatory written by Moore in 1923, a page with the list of Characters in the play, and 125 pages of text. There are no illustrations or drawings in the book.
The book measures 9 1/8 x 5 3/4 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, light wear at one tip, and light browning on the spine.
The next book in the group is Pastoral Loves of Daphnis and Chloe by George Moore, a limited edition that was published and signed in 1924.
It is a story about the love between Daphnis and Chloe, translated into English by George Moore. The original Greek text was written by Longus in the second century and is about two young people who were abandoned at birth, it's set on the Greek island of Lesbos, where Longus supposedly lived, and the novel is a tender portrayal of young love that is both eager and inept. The two fall in love with each other and have to go through many adventures and hardships, including abduction and pirate attacks, until they find their happy ending.
The book is a limited-edition copy of the story translated by George Moore. It has gilt lettering on the spine, gray or gray-green boards, blank endpapers, a half-title, then the limitation page, which is signed by Moore and says the book is number 846 of 1280 copies, of which 1250 are for sale. The title page says, “Done into English”, which means George Moore translated the book, it was published in London by Heinemann in 1924 and printed by T and A Constable in Edinburgh, there are 164 pages of text, with an erratum slip on page 113, and there are seven vignettes and four smaller engravings in the book as well.
The book measures 9 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, with a slightly faded spine, light rubbing at the heel and crown and at the tips, light browning on the endpapers, and some offset from the engravings, and still a very good copy of this romance between two young lovers who actually find a happy ending.
The last book in the group is Ulick and Soracha, a limited edition written and signed by Moore in 1926. It was published in New York by Boni and Liveright in 1926, it’s #901 of 1250 copies that were printed, according to the limitation page, and it’s a historical romance set in medieval Ireland during the period of Edward Bruce's attempt to liberate Ireland in 1315 (Edward was a younger brother of Robert the Bruce, King of Scots) that tells the story of Sir Ulick de Burgo's pursuit of Princess Soracha in fourteenth century Ireland.
The book has a paper label on the spine, a cream color and gray-green binding, gray-green endpapers with the bookplate of Samuel Thomas Stahl, the owner’s signature dated 1927 on the first flyleaf, then a half title and the limitation page signed by George Moore, the title page says the book was issued for subscribers only, the copyright page is dated 1926, with a vignette and tissue guard after the copyright page, then a page dedicated to Lady Cunard, the text is 235 pages long, and the book comes with the dust jacket.
Lady Cunard was an American born, London-based society figure and wife of Bache Cunard, grandson of the shipping magnate Samuel Cunard, who owned the Cunard Line; she found her husband boring and left America for London, where she had a long affair with George Moore.
The book measures 9 x 6 inches wide and is in very good condition, with a tight binding and clean pages and text. The spine on the book and dust jacket are a bit dark, there’s light wear at the tips and offset on the tissue guard from the vignette illustration, and other than that, the book is in very good condition.
