With a Memoir Of The Author; Biographical Notices Of Some Of The Distinguished Contemporaries; And Annotations And Original Documents Illustrative Of The History Of Rhode-Island And Providence Plantations, from the First Settlement to the end of the first century. M. starting on page 9 and running to page 25, followed by Notes To The Memoir, another title page starting after the Notes, with a Dedication to the Honorable William Coddington that lasts for seven pages, and the Historical Discourse runs from page 57 to page 176, followed by a long Appendix, for a total of 270 pages in the book altogether; and it appears there are cancel numbers on the first Dedication page - it reads “7” at the bottom - and at the bottom of the first page of the Discourse - it reads “9” at the bottom. This is the first historical account of Rhode Island, written by John Callender, Jr. (1706 - 1748), an American pastor and historian of the First Baptist Church in Newport, Rhode Island. Callender delivered an address with this title on March 24, 1738, and the address was known as the Century Sermon because it was reprinted as a book by the Rhode Island Historical Society in 1838, with the memoir from the author and notes by Romeo Elton, and it was the only civic and religious history of Rhode Island for more than one hundred years. See Sabin 10076. The book is 8vo. and measures 8 3/4 x 5 3/4 in. wide, with a tight binding, light wear on the heel and crown of the spine, wear near the gilt decoration and a small gouge in one compartment on the spine, wear at the tips, light brown spots and occasional offset on some pages, and a rare and important history of Rhode-Island. #48 #1705
