Labradorite is a calcium-enriched feldspar mineral first identified in Labrador, Canada, which can display an iridescent effect (schiller). As with all plagioclase members, the crystal system is triclinic, and three directions of cleavage are present, two of which are nearly at right angles and are more obvious, being of good to perfect quality (while the third direction is poor). It occurs as clear, white to gray, blocky to lath shaped grains in common mafic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro, as well as in anorthosites. Although the first pieces were identified on Paul’s Island near the town of Nain in Labrador, itt has also been reported in Poland, Norway, Finland, and various other locations worldwide, with the most recent distribution discovered in Madagascar, China, Australia, Slovakia, and the Rockies of the United States. The uniqueness of the iridescent optical effect Labradorite can display had earned the phenomenon the name “labradorescence,” which was first coined by the geologist Ove Balthasar Bøggild in 1924. Because the conditions are highly specific, requiring very slow cooling of the igneous rock, not all labradorites exhibit labradorescence, and not all plagioclases that exhibit labradorescence are labradorites, as they may become a similar substance known as bytownite. Some gemstone varieties of labradorite exhibiting a high degree of labradorescence are called spectrolite, and the value of a piece is often determined by the quality of the iridescence, although extremely large whole specimens are rare due to fragmentation caused by microvariations in the cooling speed, and therefore are sought after even more, regardless of sheen.
