Terrell James was born in Houston, Texas in 1955. She studied art at Lamar High School, and after graduating in 1973 she traveled to Guanajuato, Mexico to focus on painting and printmaking at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende. In 1975 she attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where her interests in nature, geometry, and landscapes coalesced into a distinctive personal style. From 1980 to 1985, James worked as a field collector for the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution. While in this position she was involved in the cataloging and exhibition of works by artist Forrest Bess, as well as her organization of the 1986 exhibition of Bess’ paintings in collaboration with Hiram Butler Gallery. James began her Field Studies series in 1997, a numbered set of works that is still ongoing and are often made in parallel with other works, or form unique connections when viewed next to one another. She has had numerous solo shows around the country at many galleries and museums, and her work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and the Centro Cultural Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico. She continues to live and work in Houston, making sculptures and abstract paintings as well as prints of her pieces.
