The Arnex Watch Company began in 1971 when Claude Wollman started it as a joint stock company, looking to find employment for the citizens of Arnex-sur-orbe, a municipality in the Swiss canton of Vaud near the French border. They made watches in Switzerland and sold them cheaply in the United States, seeking to corner the market on good quality but affordably priced pieces with shock resistance and anti-magnetic properties. In addition to streamlining the use of acrylics over glass in watches they perfected usage of the Unitas 6497 movement which later became the workhorse of most Swiss luxury brands. The watch industry was devastated by the collapse of the Swiss Franc in 1974, and the company limped along until 1995 when they went into bankruptcy. For several years a variety of Swiss and French companies bought and sold the company back and forth through a series of mergers and acquisitions, until J.P. Pingouin Co, Hunsberger & Cie were absorbed into Lucien Piccard. Arnex then became a private watch company, manufacturing labels for a variety of companies with a minimum order amount. This led to Arnex watches appearing at Neiman Marcus, Kaltron, Hallmark, and many more department stores ever since. Their earliest pieces are most highly sought after, particularly their pocket watches, as they are usually in 14K solid gold and utilize older designs, marketed as “homage” styles. Later pieces are still appreciated for their sturdiness and longevity, and many of the “cheap” features and materials used early on are now considered standard in watchmaking around the world.
