Sveta Esser was born in Russia in 1975 into a well-to-do family, and studied art from an early age. Encouraged by her parents, she enrolled in the Yekaterinburg College of Art in the Russian Urals, a place known for its scenic beauty. While attending college she met and later married fellow artist Alex Pauker, moving with him to Israel to live in an artist’s village in Haifa. Her second art degree came from a student exchange program which allowed her to travel all over Europe exploring the scenery. She also gained experience working as an illustrator and a creative consultant at a publishing house in Italy. She became particularly enamored with the work of the French Fauves, seeking to portray the scenery in the vibrant, unblended colors they popularized. The strong primal colors of her minimalist landscapes made with thick impasto oils using only a palette knife depict the natural scenery she witnessed throughout her life, sometimes mixing locations to create somewhere entirely new. She continues to share a studio with her husband, although most of her works are now made in the south of France, her favorite location. Esser’s pieces can be found in many private collections in Israel, Europe, and the United States, and have been exhibited in numerous galleries as well as museums around the Mediterranean.
