The Sioux or Oceti Sakowin, also known as the Dakota/Lakota, are a group of Native American tribes from the northern Great Plains. Originally living around Lake Superior in present-day Minnesota and Wisconsin, they were pushed further and further west by wars and encroaching settlers. Horsebound warriors from the tribe were some of the most successful in resisting the U.S. Army, including their annihilation of the 7th Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of Little Big Horn. After the Massacre at Wounded Knee, the tribes dispersed and many children were put into boarding schools, where they were exposed to Western language, history, and culture. Some, like Amos Bad Heart Bull and Oscar Howe, discovered visual art in its myriad styles, and began painting tribal events and imagery in an effort to both preserve their culture and share it with an increasingly more tolerant world. Although the identity of this artist is unknown, the tag on the reverse suggests that this piece was for sale along with other Sioux artwork at some point.
