Silk Brocade Wallet from Saga Prefecture for Geisha. Comes in wooden box with protective sleeve. The Kanji reads "Premium Saga Nishiki."

Brocade is a class of richly decorative shuttle-woven fabrics, often made in colored silks and sometimes with gold and silver threads. The name, related to the same root as the word “broccoli,” comes from Italian broccato, meaning “embossed cloth.” Brocade is typically woven on a draw loom. It is a supplementary weft technique; that is, the ornamental brocading is produced by a supplementary, non-structural, weft in addition to the standard weft that holds the warp threads together. The purpose of this is to give the appearance that the weave was actually embroidered on.
Saga Nishiki is a form of brocading from Saga Prefecture, Japan. It is a unique form of brocading in that Japanese paper coated in either gold, silver, or lacquer is used as the warp. As the technique is time-consuming, only several inches are produced each day. Saga Nishiki was created at the end of the Edo period by Kashima Nabeshima, the daimyō (magnate or feudal lord) of Saga. At this time it was referred to as Kashima Nishiki. It was not until the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910 that it was renamed “Saga Nishiki.”
